Who else is in a better position to talk about the role of a Functional Lead than someone like me - a Functional Lead in Salesforce ecosystem.
So what is their role? Let’s look at it diagrammatically:
Functional Leads embody the role of Advanced Admin + Business Analyst + Team Lead.
Advanced Admin: They have advanced knowledge on configurational aspect of Salesforce. Think who have clear idea of Sharing Rule, Data Model, Dynamic forms, Profile, permission set groups, data loading.
Business Analyst: They are the individuals talking to clients and understanding business need. They lead the discovery sessions with the customers understanding the entire scope of the project in minute detail.
Team Lead: They lead the team of admins, developers and QA. If anyone of them have any questions regarding how a functionality is intended to work, they go to functional leads for clarification.
In an internal/client-facing role, they are comparable to Salesforce Product Owner, where they own the product end to end.
I like this definition from Grok,
A Salesforce Functional Lead is a versatile role that combines business analysis, system configuration, leadership, and user-focused responsibilities to ensure Salesforce meets organizational needs effectively, all while staying current with platform advancements.
Next Post: I’ll explore it in further detail from a Data Flow Perspective.
