Does knowing process flow diagram make you a good Business Analyst?
Do you need to know how to draw process flow diagrams to be a good Business Analyst?
Tl;dr: no you don’t.
Let’s say your car is broken and you take it to a mechanic. Do you really care if they fix it using a screwdriver or a wrench? I don’t think so. As long as your car is up and running again, you don’t give 2 cents about how it is fixed.
That’s the same way in the world of Business Analysis as well. Process flow diagram, swim lane diagrams, business process model are the ‘tools’ that a BA uses to solve for a business problem.
It doesn’t matter if you use process flow diagram or even use text messages to converse with the business. As long as you are able to clearly understand the requirement in some shape or form and able to communicate that with business, you can use any tool you want.
Knowing how to create a process flow diagram will not make you a good BA. But a good BA knows when to use which tool in their arsenal to clearly understand business requirements.
